Anger Management Group Therapy for Children

The anger management group is targeted towards children from ages 6 to 13.Over the course of five 90-minute sessions, a variety of skills are learned.First, we learn how to identify some of the bodily symptoms of negativeemotion.  Then, we learn how to more effectively distinguish between anger, frustration, disappointment, hurt,  fear, and so forth.  Once feelings aremore accurately identified, the actions that are taken to feel better can bemore successfully implemented.  Cognitive behavior therapy techniques will be used to help children better understand and more effectively cope with their feelings.  Cognitive techniques, deep breathing, and alternative ways to diffuse will all be taught.  At the same time, you will help us monitor and reward better self-control throughout the sessions - and, we will set you up with a system to maintain positive behavior that is learned withinthe group session.  The goal is both to learn better coping skills at the group, and to change behavior both at home and at school.

Adapting to ADHD Group

The Organizational Skills Group is targeted towards children from ages 9 through 16.  Over the course of five 60-minute sessions a variety of skills will be taught and practiced.  We will teach your child how to organize their responsibilities and maintain both an organized calendar and working space.  We will then move on to enhancing attention and concentration. Finally, we will help your children develop better impulse control by teaching them how to stop and think before acting.   Reward systems will be set up for home and school, so that your child is actively seeking positive feedback for a job well accomplished.  An introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will be given, with the goal to decrease black and white all or nothing thinking and to enhance self-esteem.

F.A.S.T. ® Reading Program

The F.A.S.T.® Reading Program is a systematic phonics based reading program that is designed for children who experience difficulties in reading. Students that benefit from this program may have specific learning disabilities or may simply be reading below grade level.  The F.A.S.T.® Reading System starts off with the basic building blocks necessary to read fluently - blending, segmenting, and phonic manipulation.  It is taught in  approximately ten sessions at an individual level – one teacher, one student.  The program is taught by seasoned teachers from the Laureate Academy®.  The Laureate Academy® is an independent school that specializes in teaching children who have unique learning needs.

Parenting Skills Group

Kids are not delivered with attached instruction manuals – and that is why parenting groups were developed!  The Parenting Skills Groups are targeted towards parents of youngsters ages 5 through 18.  There is one group for parents of children ages 5 through 11, and another group for parents of teens from ages 12 to 18.  Parents will learn more about the developmental stages that their children go through, as well as some of the unique sensitivities that children have that may require special parenting techniques.  Once parents better understand their children’s needs, it is a little bit easier to parent.  To make the job even easier, some tried and tested techniques for encouraging cooperation will be taught.  The beauty of the parenting group setting is that you will have both the expertise of professionals and the wisdom of other parents to draw upon.  The group setting also helps you realize that you are not the useless and cruel parent that your child might make you out to be – you will see that many other parents face the same challenges that you do, and are just as lost about howto react.

Parenting the Angry/Explosive Child Workshops

Another option that is available for parents is a two-session seminar on how to deal with explosive children.  This is designed specifically for parents who have extremely challenging  children and teens who either have meltdowns or aggressive explosions on a regular basis.  One group will be for parents of children who are 6 through 9 years; the other will be for parents of teens who are 10 to 13.  In the group sessions you will learn how to identify the precursors of a ‘meltdown’ and how to head off explosions at the earlier stages of development.  Although some group discussion will be encouraged, the majority of the group time will be spent on teaching you about the unique characteristics of explosive children, and how to more peacefully live with you child.

Social Skills Group

The Social Skills Group is targeted towards children from ages 6 to 13. Over the course of six 90-minute sessions a variety of self-awareness and interpersonal skills are learned.  We start off with basic social skills - maintaining eye contact, respecting personal body space, and developing a sensitivity to and understanding of subtle social cues.  We then teach listening and communication skills.  We work at developing the skill and self-confidence to initiate and maintain conversation with peers.  The beauty of the group setting is that all of these skills can be practiced in a very realistic way.  Next, we teach some of the more individual skills that are necessary for healthier relationships – learning how to recognize‘black and white’ and ‘all or nothing’ thinking, and developing the capacity to think in shades of grey.  Finally, we teach children the skills they need to deal with teasing and bullying, and we work at enhancing their self-esteem.
